Students and lecturers solve assessment problems using Maple T.A
The marking of mathematical questions is time consuming and prone to inconsistency, particularly when
assessing problem-solving skills At the University of Portsmouth Maple T.A., a web-based system developed by
Maplesoft for creating tests and assignments and automatically assessing student performance, has not only
enabled the efficient and accurate marking of examinations papers, but has also allowed their peer moderation by
students. Peer moderation, the preliminary delivery of questions to students for checking and approval, has been .
successfully achieved by innovative use of ‘reusable assessment objects’. Students get feedback on their learning
from reusable assessment objects, while lecturers get feedback on the quality of their questions directly from
students.

Finding Faults

Bob Beasant has a firm eye on the future. He is an engineer at Kelvatek, a supplier to the Electricity Supply

Industry specializing in the low voltage distribution sector. He recently chose Maple™ and MapleSim™ as his
preferred toolset because his projects demand superior modeling and simulation technology. He intends to use
both tools to help him create new algorithms and improve existing ones in the field of fault location on
underground electricity cables.

The Key to Better Research Results in Mechatronics Systems

CHALLENGE: BUILDING A MOTION RESEARCH DEVICE FASTER

Professor Venkat Krovi, an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY), came to Quanser looking for a means to quickly physically prototype a yet non-existent 6 DOF motion platform for his latest experimental research. In his work Dr. Krovi, ultimately aims, in his own words, to “enhance human-manipulation capabilities, such as dexterity, strength and skill with articulated mechanical systems”. Applications of his research range widely from distributed payload manipulation by robot-teams to remote-teleoperation with force-scaledfeedback and haptically-enhanced virtualsurgical and driving simulators.
